Why India celebrates Labour Day?

Why India celebrates Labour Day:

  1. Historical Origin:
Labour Day has its roots in the global labor movement, particularly the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, USA, where workers demanded an eight-hour workday.

  2. Indian Context:
Labour Day was first celebrated in India on May 1, 1923, in Chennai (then Madras) by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. It was initiated by Comrade Singaravelar, who also passed a resolution for the government to recognize May 1 as Labour Day.

  3. Purpose:

    • To acknowledge and appreciate the hard work of laborers and workers across all industries.

    • To advocate for workers' rights, fair wages, and safe working conditions.

    • To remind society of the importance of labor in building the nation.
